Anatomy of the mural ILINDEN by Borko Lazeski
Borko Lazeski (1917–1993) was a Macedonian visual artist regarded as the pioneer of Macedonia's first postwar generation of academically educated artists. Lazeski studied at Belgrade's Academy of Fine Arts during 1933/34. Additionally, he continued his schooling in Bulgaria, attending the State Art Academy in Sofia, where he graduated in 1943. In early 1945, due to a French government scholarship, he attended the Paris National School of Fine Arts (École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts), in Dukos de la Haille's fresco painting department. Here, he uncovers monumental techniques, eventually becoming his artistic ambition. During his two-year stay in Paris, Borko Lazeski worked in the French artist André Lhote's studio, who played a key role in shaping Lazeski as an author. At the beginning of 1945, he participated in establishing the art school in Skopje and was one of the founders of the Association of Artists of Macedonia. Lazeski is the first CEO of the Art Gallery in Skopje (founded in 1948).
The theme of the Ilinden Uprising, which serves as a source of inspiration for the author, is depicted in various techniques and creative approaches throughout his artistic career. Anatomy of the mural "Ilinden 1903" is an analysis of the fresco of the same name by Borko Lazeski, which represents a significant part of the Macedonian cultural and historical heritage. This mural (260 x 520 cm), created in 1950 using the fresco-bono technique, is the first of its kind in our country. The subject focuses on a pivotal episode in Macedonian history, the Ilinden Uprising in 1903. The mural was located in the former Army Hall (JNA), which was demolished in the 1963 earthquake. In 1951, he was working on the painting "Mechkin Kamen" (oil on canvas, 300 x 500 cm), evidence shows that is located in Brijuni, Republic of Croatia. As well as information concerning the existence of another work on the same theme, which should be housed in the National Museum of Macedonia (referred to as the National Museum in the data). In a moving monument to 1903, the artist replicated his masterpiece in 1991, painting the walls of Krushevo's Montana Hotel with a faithful reproduction of the 1950 fresco. This significant piece of art, measuring 260 x 458 cm and rendered in acrylic, brings new life to the subject's timeless narrative. In the heart of Krushevo, a city steeped in the rich mosaic of Macedonian history, the "Montana" hotel becomes a suitable canvas for reviving this key moment in the past. Against the backdrop of the walls, the artist's strokes evoke the spirit of resistance and endurance that defined the Ilinden Uprising of 1903. Through the vivid hues and dynamic compositions of the acrylic reproduction, the artist captures the essence of Ilinden, inviting viewers to witness the courage and sacrifice of those who fought for freedom.
Within the framework of the exhibition, we present 24 sketches and drawings, precisely made by the author to serve as a plan for a monumental fresco. These sketches are not just preliminary studies, but rather cover a significant part of the author's artistic journey, offering a deep insight into his creative perception during that period. Each sketch demonstrates the author's natural aptitude, originality, and strong eye for detail, capturing moments and intricate nuances. The author expertly puts thoughts and feelings onto paper through these sketches, creating the groundwork for the fresco's completion. As viewers observe the intricate details of each sketch, they are invited to embark on a journey of discovery of the layers of meaning and symbolism woven into the artist's creation. It is important to note that in addition to the author's pioneering efforts in painting, there is a seven-year hiatus between Borko Lazeski and the first post-war academic fine artist. Borko Lazeski's artistic legacy has a lasting impact on Macedonian visual art and he is considered one of the most significant authors in Macedonian modern art. He left behind a rich body of work that reflects his creative development and the influence of the time and environment in which he worked. His work is distinguished by different styles, from realism to abstraction, and his works explore and present different aspects of Macedonian culture and identity.

Mule Variations
Gjorge Jovanovik's drawings vividly explore the surreal and the symbolic, mixing elements of reality with fantastical visuals to create compelling narratives. Jovanovik's paintings use a combination of sharp, contrasting imagery to elicit questions and generate a powerful visual impression. Jovanovik's artistic method involves placing commonplace objects in exceptional circumstances, allowing viewers to explore the depth of symbolism concealed in his works. The elements he employs combine to create a strange and unsettling scene, echoing themes of vulnerability, security, and the uncertain nature of life.
Jovanovik's style is heavily influenced by Art Informel, which values spontaneity, freedom from convention, and emotional intensity. His drawings frequently deviate from traditional narrative patterns, favouring a more intuitive and pragmatic approach. This helps him to convey the fluid and often conflicting aspect of human experience, reflecting the complexity of today's reality. His collage-like techniques offer his creations a dynamic character, combining different textures, colours, and shapes to produce a cohesive but multi-layered composition. This strategy not only improves the visual appeal but also expands the options for interpretation, giving viewers numerous entryways into the artwork. Jovanovik's drawings are a powerful commentary on the human condition, combining humour, irony and deep insight to engage viewers on both an intellectual and emotional level. Through his inventive and intriguing compositions, he invites us to test our ideas of reality and welcome the unexpected.
Vladimir Lukash's drawings are a fascinating exploration of whimsy, humour, and the grotesque. His distinctive style combines intricate line work with a playful yet subversive approach to themes and subjects, and the drawings frequently look like they were pulled from a fictional narrative, filled with surreal characters and scenes that invite viewers to consider the deeper meanings behind the playful facade. Lukash frequently employs a monochromatic palette, emphasising the composition's dynamic and chaotic energy through striking black-and-white contrasts. The characters are drawn in a simplistic style that appears to be light-hearted and humorous at first. However, upon closer examination, the drawings show a layer of social commentary and introspection, addressing complicated sociopolitical circumstances through the lens of absurdity. Lukash's method is evocative of Art Informel, which emphasises spontaneity. His drawings have a raw immediacy, conveying the essence of his thoughts and views without regard for traditional artistic norms. This style enables him to explore themes such as the human condition, societal standards, and the absurdities of modern life while keeping visual coherence and creative integrity. His paintings frequently blur the lines between reality and imagination, resulting in a realm where the familiar meets the bizarre. This intersection is where Lukash's art excels, as he combines simple lines and curves to create a universe that is both intriguing and terrifying. The drawings invite viewers to interact with the artwork on numerous levels, ranging from admiring the technical talent to contemplating the underlying ideas. Overall, Vladimir Lukash's drawings demonstrate the strength of line art and the artist's ability to portray complex thoughts using seemingly basic techniques. His work is a charming and provocative voyage through the bizarre and real, making an indelible impression on everyone who meets it.
Vuk Mitevski's drawings exhibit a unique blend of abstract forms and symbolic elements, characterised by their bold lines and imaginative composition. The simplicity of his line work reveals the depth of the issues he investigates, resulting in a striking visual language that encourages viewers to probe deeper layers of meaning. Mitevski's artwork demonstrates the author's mastery of line and shape, focusing on minimalism to convey ideas and emotions. The interplay of geometric shapes and organic curves in his creations demonstrates a thorough awareness of the human form and its expression. These works, with their complex and flowing lines, capture the essence of Mitevski's style - an engaging dialogue between abstraction and figuration. Mitevski's drawings often draw inspiration from the principles of Art Informel, emphasizing spontaneity and the raw, immediate expression of the artist's inner world. His paintings are a tribute to the power of simplicity in art, demonstrating that even the most direct lines can provoke reactions and interpretation. Mitevski's art continues to challenge and expand the frontiers of contemporary drawing, mixing traditional methods with modern sensibilities to create works that are both timeless and stylistically appealing. He expresses himself through powerful lyricism that incorporates scenographic and sculptural aspects. Mitevski creates works in the tradition of neo-cubism, surrealism, and the Byzantine visual legacy, but in a contemporary setting. His works use an associative approach to interweave the abstract and symbolic parts of the perceived subject.

MAIL ART

The "Mail Art" project is a unique and collaborative artistic endeavour that transcends geographical boundaries, connecting people from around the world through the medium of printed cards. The concept is both simple and profound: printed cards serve as blank canvases, distributed to individuals across the globe with an invitation to contribute their artistic expressions. The cards, once adorned with original drawings, are then sent back via postal mail, creating a global network of shared creativity.
At the heart of this project is the idea of fostering a sense of community and interconnectedness through art. The printed cards act as carriers of creative potential, travelling between diverse individuals and artists who, despite being separated by physical distances, are brought together through a shared artistic journey.
The process begins with the distribution of these printed cards to people from various corners of the world. Each participant is encouraged to infuse their unique perspectives, styles, and inspirations onto the card, transforming it into a personalised work of art. The act of drawing on these cards becomes a form of communication that goes beyond words, expressing individual narratives and cultural influences.
As the completed cards make their way back through the postal system, they become tangible tokens of the collaborative effort put forth by artists and participants worldwide. The journey of each card, marked by the stamps, postmarks, and signatures it accumulates along the way, tells a story of its own—an artistic narrative that transcends borders and unites creative minds.
The resulting collection of these exchanged artworks forms a diverse and eclectic gallery of global perspectives, offering a snapshot of the interconnectedness of the global artistic community. "Mail Art" becomes not just an art project but a testament to the power of creativity to forge connections and break down barriers, one postcard at a time. Through this project, participants share not only their artistic expressions but also a sense of camaraderie and the joy of connecting with like-minded individuals across the world.

THE HOUSE - THE CHAOS
The Art Colony with a Round Table and Exhibition "The House-the Chaos" is a profound and symbolic initiative that brings together female painters from regions marked by armed confrontations and conflicts, namely Albania, Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Moldova, and Macedonia.
It represents a harmonious blend of creativity, dialogue, and healing. ART CAN
The Art Caravan embarked on an inspiring journey, weaving through the fabric of 10 Macedonian cities arranged in the form of an open circle—a symbolic link designed to mend the frayed threads of trust in the community. What began as a mission to recover disturbed trust evolved into an unexpectedly heartening and expansive endeavour, aptly demonstrating that art has the power to transcend boundaries and unite people.
The project was supported by the Foundation Open Society Institute - Macedonia, the European Cultural Foundation, Catholic Relief Services, Gemak, UNHCR, Pro-Helvetia

The choice of arranging the cities in the form of an open circle carries profound symbolism. It symbolizes a collective effort to close the gap of distrust and build connections among communities. The circular arrangement metaphorically represents the interconnectedness of the cities, emphasizing unity and collaboration.
The mobile Art Caravan serves as a vehicle for recovering trust, and the circular route becomes a visual reminder of the continuous, unbroken effort to rebuild connections. The artists, through their creativity, act as catalysts in the process of healing and rebuilding a sense of mutual understanding.

The call for participation in the Art Caravan resonated far and wide, attracting a remarkable 51 artists—three times more than initially planned. This unexpected turnout reinforced the idea that art possesses a universal language that can bridge divides.
The Mobile Art Colony, with its unexpected surprises and overwhelming support, emerged as more than just an artistic journey. It became a testament to the transformative power of art in rebuilding trust and fostering unity. The collaboration of diverse artists, the warm reception from communities, and the media's enthusiastic promotion all underscored the idea that, indeed, Art Can. WHITE DAWN
Army Hall - Skopje / April 2000
On December 25 1999, it will be six decades since Kosta Solev Racin's lyrical anthology "White Dawn" was published. It is an extraordinary event in Macedonia's cultural and political history. The publication of this seminal literary work has preserved the truth about the circumstances of the destitute, humiliated, mistreated, and exterminated Macedonians. It is a literary masterpiece that calls for a fight for shining ideas, for the free man, and for "the day above all days".
Poetic & artistic map
by Kosta S Racin
Bibliophile edition – map with calligraphic imprints of the poems by Dragutin Avramovski–Gute and the literary supplements by Pero Korobar
Racin's talent marks the times in which his name and work are linked with the dreams of freedom and social justice that have been passed down through generations. Racin founded contemporary Macedonian literature. His poetical name is elevated as a wonderful memorial to the foundation stone of the Macedonian people's war, his history of freedom, and the dignified life of the Man.
His powerful, magnificent anthology "White Dawn" is his finest achievement in poetry, confirming the ability to express the most nuanced thoughts in a language that had long been forbidden and denied.
To commemorate this significant anniversary, the publisher "Kulturen zivot" and the Association for Culture IKON created and published this poetic creative map.

Root, water - nest, bird
Art colony Kicevo - Knezevski monastery / May 1999 // Skopje Summer Festival / June 1999 // Ohrid Summer Festival / August 1999 // Congres str & A str - Boston, USA / October 2000
The project Root, Water - Nest, Bird expresses the perspective of a collection of authors - creatives from various art types and backgrounds (cultural, national, etc.) - on their own destiny and a strong sense of freedom. Presenting intimate and profound encounters with the present moment, hopes and longings, losses, and oneself. Flow from the essence of the group of authors, who were portrayed through a performance rather than "by exhibition". Root, Water, Nest, Bird is a creative drama set around the end of the century. An interior sense that stems from the soil's womb, its roots, the waterways that water it, and the timeless mystery of the presence of "life beyond".
Performance - Installation
All of it impacted the brains and spirits of these authors, and in the end, each of them will acknowledge their own faith. The message and wishes would be: do not walk over (trample upon), humanity's material and spiritual well-being to prevent becoming merely one giant "nothing". It is an attempt to illustrate the concept of "the classical picture" in layers, as well as our time.
We feel that we are creating a new aesthetics, one with a larger meaning, without worrying about whether we will be understood by an ordinary viewer because we must be aware of the creative weakness, which is the most defining feature of twentieth-century art. The interaction with this work of art reveals new analogies and symbolism.
In 1999, the mesmerising performance-installation, "Root, Water-Nest, Bird," made its debut at the Art Colony Kicevo within the enchanting surroundings of Knezevski Monastery. This artistic experience unfolded as part of the Skopje Summer Festival and later graced the Ohrid Summer Festival, leaving an indelible mark on the cultural landscape during the summer of 1999. This innovative fusion of performance and installation art was a testament to the creative spirit flourishing in Macedonia at the turn of the millennium.
In the year 2000, "Root, Water-Nest, Bird" transcended borders and found a new audience in Boston, USA. The international presentation marked a significant milestone in the global recognition of this unique performance-installation.
Participants: Bart Usida, Mari Novotni-Johns, Joan Rays, Brus Bemis, Milan Kohot, Nora Stojanovik, Irena Paskali, Nevzat Bejtuli-Kica and Veronik Epiter
